Richard III, unhappy and ugly, consumed by the ambition to become king, allowed his reigning brother, King Edward IV, to die, and had the man who was to succeed him, George, Duke of Clarence, murdered. He died in 1485 at the age of 32 during the Battle of Bosworth Field; he was the last king of England to die in battle (“A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse! %BB). His death brought an end to the hegemony of the Plantagenets, who had ruled England for 300 years, and paved the way for the Tudor dynasty. Shakespeare depicts the tyrant’s rise and sudden fall, portraying him as a power-hungry despot, a cursed king, while a toxic atmosphere reigns at court.
